Improvised Explosive Devices

Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) are a significant global threat. These devices are homemade explosives designed to harm, disrupt, or terrorize. An IED is a bomb constructed using materials that are readily available, such as fertilizers, chemicals, and electronic components. Unlike military-grade explosives, IEDs are improvised, making them highly unpredictable in design and effect.

U.S. Air Force explosive ordnance disposal technicians assigned to the 355th Civil Engineer Squadron participate in a training exercise designed to test their skills in scenarios covering overseas improvised explosive devices at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, Ariz., May 24, 2023. EOD swept for, located and disposed of mock IEDs as part of an annual training requirement. (U.S. Air Force video by Airman 1st Class Jasmyne Bridgers-Matos)
