Gun Team

In modern military operations, the gun team plays a pivotal role in providing sustained firepower and suppressing enemy threats. Often referred to as the backbone of a squad’s firepower, this specialized unit operates crew-served weapons, such as machine guns, to dominate the battlefield.

A gun team typically consists of two or more soldiers responsible for the operation of a heavy weapon. Commonly used systems include medium or heavy machine guns, such as the M240 or M2, which are more powerful and effective than standard infantry rifles.

2nd Battalion, 34th Armored Regiment, 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, conduct qualification of the M240 machine gun at Studnica Range, Drawsko Pomorskie Training Area, Poland, Aug. 26, 2021. Regional security in Europe continues to be a top priority for the U.S., and utilizing rotational forces allows for more flexibility to deter threats when they arise. (U.S. Army video by Spc.
