Grenadier

A grenadier is a specialized soldier who combines precision rifle skills with the ability to effectively deploy grenades in combat. Historically, grenadiers were elite troops trained to hurl hand-thrown explosives, but modern warfare has evolved their role significantly. Today, grenadiers are an integral part of infantry units, equipped with advanced weaponry like under-barrel grenade launchers (UBGLs) or standalone systems, such as the M203 or the Mk 19 grenade launcher.

U.S. Marines with Company A, Ground Combat Element Integrated Task Force (GCEITF), conduct grenadier training with the M203 grenade launcher at Range K504 on Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, January 14, 2015. (U.S. Marine Corps video by Cpl. Paul S. Martinez/Released) Includes soundbites from 1st Lt. Jonathon M. Yenny, platoon commander, Second Platoon, Company A, Ground Combat Element Integrated Task Force.

In the field, grenadiers play a dual role: engaging enemies with their rifles and delivering explosive ordnance with pinpoint accuracy. Their presence boosts the tactical capabilities of their unit, offering a decisive edge in both offensive and defensive operations. Whether in urban warfare or open battlefields, the rifleman grenadier remains a key figure in modern infantry tactics, demonstrating the power of adaptability and specialization in combat.
